Moving Volume Calculator
Last updated: 2026-06-25
Your moving volume is estimated by adding the average volume of each item (furniture, appliances, boxes) into a total (m³), and a truck is recommended on a 1-ton (~5 m³), 2.5-ton (~12 m³) or 5-ton (~22 m³) basis.
Item volumes and loading benchmarks are averages, so this is a reference estimate; confirm the exact truck during an in-home survey.

Total moving volume (estimate)
0 m³
| Item | Volume (m³) |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | |
| Washing machine | |
| Bed | |
| Wardrobe | |
| Sofa | |
| Desk / dining table | |
| Other large appliances | |
| Moving boxes | |
| Total volume |
This is a reference estimate based on average item volumes and truck-loading benchmarks. It can vary with the shape of belongings and loading efficiency, so allow a margin and confirm with an in-home survey.
How to use
- Enter main furniture and appliances — enter the number of major items such as refrigerator, washer, bed, wardrobe and sofa.
- Enter box count — enter the estimated number of standard moving boxes (about 0.06 m³).
- View results — calculate to see total volume (m³), the recommended truck size and per-item volume in a table.
Moving volume and truck size
A moving truck is mostly determined by the volume of belongings (m³), not weight. Furniture and appliances are bulky and more boxes add more volume, so we sum the average volume of each item to get total volume and compare it with truck capacity.
| Truck | Loading volume (approx.) | Suitable size |
|---|---|---|
| 1-ton truck | about 5 m³ | Studio / small (under 10 pyeong) |
| 2.5-ton truck | about 12 m³ | 10–25 pyeong / 1–2 person household |
| 5-ton truck | about 22 m³ | 25–40 pyeong / 3–4 person household |
| 5-ton+ / 2 trucks | over 22 m³ | 40 pyeong and up / many belongings |
This calculator sums the average volume of each item (e.g. refrigerator ~0.9 m³, washer ~0.5 m³, bed ~1.2 m³, box ~0.06 m³), then recommends a truck with one step of margin for loading efficiency. The rate/volume benchmarks are separated as code constants (`// variable`) so you can adjust them.
Once the truck is set, use the Moving Cost Calculator for the estimated cost and the Moving Checklist for what to prepare.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How do I choose the moving truck size?
Moving trucks are chosen by the volume of belongings (m³). As a rule of thumb a 1-ton truck holds about 5 m³, a 2.5-ton about 12 m³, and a 5-ton about 22 m³. Studios use a 1-ton, 20-pyeong homes a 2.5-ton, and homes of 30 pyeong or more a 5-ton, though the real choice depends on the amount and shape of belongings.
Is the volume from this calculator accurate?
It is a reference estimate based on the average volume of each item. The same furniture can differ in size and shape, and loading efficiency (empty space in the truck) changes the truck you actually need, so it is best to allow some margin.
What is the volume of one moving box?
This calculator assumes one standard moving box is about 0.06 m³ (roughly 40–50 cm per side). Heavy items like books use small boxes and light items like bedding use large boxes, so real volume can vary.
What if I have more than the recommended truck size?
The recommended size already includes margin for loading efficiency. If your belongings approach the limit, you may need the next size up or an extra trip, so confirm the exact amount with the company during the in-home survey.
